Graphic journalist  Olivier Kugler features in a new exhibition at House of Illustration, titled ‘Journeys Drawn: Illustration from the Refugee Crisis’. The exhibition runs from November 2018 – March 2019 and features multi-media work by 12 contemporary illustrators, including Olivier’s reportage on Syrian refugees, animation by Iranian refugee Majid Adin, and pages by Kate Evans from Threads .

Olivier Kugler is a reportage illustrator based in London. His graphic novel, Escaping Wars and Waves (Myriad 2018), is a compelling series of evocative drawings documents the experiences of Syrian refugees he met in Iraqi Kurdistan, Greece, France, Germany, Switzerland and England, mostly on assignment for Médecins Sans Frontières.

Based on many interviews, and hundreds of reference photos, Olivier’s beautifully observed drawings of his interviewees bring to life their location – a room, a camp, on the road. His reporting of their stories is peppered with snatches of conversation and images of the objects that have become such a significant part of their lives. House of Illustration is a registered charity and the UK’s only public gallery dedicated solely to illustration and graphic art. Founded by Sir Quentin Blake it opened in July 2014 in King’s Cross, London.
