Inspiring Talks Brighton with Ruth Figgest

Share

Ruth Figgest, author of Magnetism,  is set to mesmerise the crowd at the next installment of Inspiring Talks at The Nightingale Rooms in Brighton.

The event series sees three speakers discuss their projects, work or personal story. There’s also a quick 5 minute slot at the end of the night which gives any audience member the chance to jump up and say something they want to get off their chest or announce to a room full of people.

Magnetism focuses on the relationship between mother and daughter Caroline and Erica, who are best of friends and worst of enemies.

Set in the American mid- and south-west, their story unfolds over more than 50 years against a backdrop of sweeping social change. Feisty and argumentative, they roll with the punches, surviving car crashes, awkward family gatherings, relationship disasters—and plastic surgery.

‘This novel has stayed with me as one of the most relatable and realistic novels I’ve encountered on the subject of difficult mother-daughter relationships. It’s my kind of writing: stylish and taut, full of life.’ Literary Sofa

Ruth Figgest was born in Oxford but grew up in the USA. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex.

Ruth will be joined by Liz Peters, Margaret Sinclair and Sue Bellingham. Doors open at 7.30pm and the speakers will start at 8pm. The event is held upstairs in the Nightingale Room at The Grand Central pub next to Brighton Station.
