Journey’s Drawn: Illustration from the Refugee Crisis is a touring exhibition by House of Illustration which explores ways in which illustration has engaged with the human stories behind the headlines, through reportage illustration, graphic novels and animations.

Journey’s Drawn runs from the 12 October – 8 December 2019 at Peterborough Museum. It features 40 multi-media works by 12 contemporary artists, two of whom are themselves refugees. The show will document refugee journeys both observed and experienced first-hand over the past three years.

Journey’s Drawn includes war zone reportage by George Butler from Syria,  Kate Evans’ graphic novel that recounts her experience of volunteering in the Calais Jungle and Olivier Kugler’s digital portraits of refugees arriving on the Greek Island of Kos, taken from his visual book, Escaping Wars and Waves.

Based on many interviews, and hundreds of reference photos, Olivier Kugler’s beautifully observed drawings of his interviewees bring to life their location – a room, a camp, on the road. His reporting of their stories is peppered with snatches of conversation and images of the objects that have become such a significant part of their lives.

‘Olivier Kugler is part of our century’s movement of journalists, like Joe Sacco, who use the 20th-century language of comics to document the world. Sacco takes us into Goražde by including himself in the drawings. Kugler does it through enmeshing our imagination in the timelapse of lines and visible voices.’ Peace News
