In the final weeks of Posy Simmonds: A Retrospective, comics expert Paul Gravett leads a conversation with Posy Simmonds and Kate Charlesworth, celebrating their parallel careers as illustrators and writers that occasionally coincided while cartooning for The Guardian.

Kate Charlesworth is a cartoonist and illustrator living and working in Edinburgh. In 2014 she collaborated with Mary and Bryan Talbot – 2012 Costa biography winners for their graphic novel Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes – to illustrate Sally Heathcote: Suffragette, published by Jonathan Cape. Her graphic memoir, Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide is a fascinating history of how post-war Britain transformed from a country hostile towards ‘queer’ lives to the LGBQTI+ universe of today, recording the political gains and challenges against a backdrop of personal experience. Currently The Observer’s graphic novel of the month, Sensible Footwear is already a cult classic and an essential guide to LGBTQI rights.

Simmonds, Charlesworth and Gravett will all be available to sign books after the talk, copies of which will be available to purchase on the night in the House of Illustration shop.
