Nicola Streeten

Myriad author Nicola Streeten will be heading to Dagenham to talk comics for the upcoming Barking and Dagenham Read Fest.

Laydeez do Comics is a female-led but not female-only unique graphic novel forum that meets monthly in London. They host guests to speak about their work with a focus on comic works based on life narrative, and the everyday.

The event will feature Wallis Eates and Rachael Ball (Laydeez Do Comics London co-ordinators), alongside Dr Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman, co-founders of Laydeez Do Comics.

Nicola Streeten is an anthropologist-turned-illustrator and comics scholar. She is the author of Billy, Me & You (Myriad, 2011), an acclaimed graphic memoir about her bereavement following the death of her two-year old son. It was initially serialised in Liquorice Magazine, a comic Nicola produced with her daughter, and it received Highly Commended in the Popular Medicine category of the 2012 British Medical Association Medical Book Awards. Nicola is co-editor with Cath Tate of The Inking Woman, published by Myriad in March 2018.

This will be the seventh annual Barking and Dagenham Read Festival, and their theme is Women and Activism. You can look through the entire line up here.

Tickets are free, but you’re recommended to book a spot. Read more here.
