Mboka Festival London featuring New Daughters of Africa

Share

Mboka Festival is heading to London! The festival runs each year in The Gambia, celebrating Gambian cultural heritage alongside African diasporic cultural heritage through film screenings, food, music, singers, poetry and book readings.

The evening’s main event will see New Daughters of Africa contributors Dorothea Smartt, Anni Domingo, TJ Dema and Kadija Sesay in conversation with editor Margaret Busby, and also reading extracts from the anthology. The evening will also feature readings and performances to honour writers recently passed, including Andrea Levy.

New Daughters of Africa spans a wealth of genres—autobiography, memoir, oral history, letters, diaries, short stories, novels, poetry, drama, humour, politics, journalism, essays and speeches—to demonstrate the diversity and remarkable literary achievements of black women who remain under-represented, and whose works continue to be under-rated, in world culture today.

‘It has been a long time since a book created the kind of buzz and excitement which has surrounded New Daughters of Africa: An International Anthology of Writing by Women of African Descent. Reserve a special place for this one on your bookshelf, it’s a must-have.’ African Arguments
